The upcoming 5 Series (G60) boasts updated aesthetics, additional features, and a diverse range of powertrain options.Â
BMW has unveiled the initial details and images of its brand-new 5 Series sedan, arriving just a month after Mercedes-Benz introduced the latest E-class. The new BMW 5 Series (codenamed G60) now includes an all-electric i5 lineup, mirroring the role of the i7 in the latest 7 Series flagship sedan. Alongside the all-electric i5 variant, the latest BMW 5 Series lineup offers a selection of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with availability varying depending on the market.
- New 5 Series is longer, wider and taller than before
- Styling more on the evolutionary side
- Features a fully vegan interior
Exterior Design of the BMW 5 Series G60.Â
The design of the 5 Series G60 can be characterized as an evolution rather than a “revolution” compared to its predecessor. Unlike the distinctive front design seen in the redesigned 7 Series, the new 5 Series maintains a more conventional appearance, foregoing the oversized grille and unconventional split headlamp design. Instead, it embraces a styling that is immediately identifiable as a BMW 5 Series while incorporating modern elements such as flush-fit door handles, sportier bumpers with blacked-out inserts, and sleek tail-lights.
Notably, the new 5 Series is larger than its predecessor, with approximately 85mm added to its length, 33mm to its width, and about 35mm to its height. The wheelbase is extended by 20mm, potentially providing a bit more rear legroom. The car boasts a drag coefficient of 0.23, contributing to its overall aerodynamic efficiency.
All New Generation BMW 5 Series InteriorÂ
Internally, the new 5 Series adopts the contemporary twin-screen cockpit, a feature already present in the updated 3 Series, the M2, and the latest 7 Series, among other recent BMW models. It incorporates the latest iDrive 8.5 system, introduced with the recent i7 M70. The screen dimensions remain consistent with other BMW models, featuring a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen for infotainment functions.
Similar to its predecessor, the latest 5 Series offers an extensive list of features, providing various options for seating and interior trim. Notably, this 8th-generation 5 Series stands out as the first BMW to feature a fully vegan interior.

Global Platform and Powertrain of the BMW 5 Series G60.
The foundation for the new 5 Series lies in BMW’s Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform, shared across all BMW models with either a longitudinally mounted internal combustion engine or electric drivetrain.
The global 5 Series lineup will initially include the 520i, 520d, and 520d xDrive models. Subsequently, the 530e and 550e xDrive plug-in hybrids will be introduced in Europe. There are also plans to introduce a 6-cylinder diesel variant in certain markets in the future.
The entry-level 520i will feature a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine delivering 205hp. In some European markets, a lower-spec version with 190hp will be available. The 520d is equipped with a 2.0-liter diesel engine, now producing 197hp, an increase of 7hp. The 530e plug-in hybrid combines a 2.0-liter engine to achieve a total output of 299hp. The more powerful 550e plug-in hybrid with xDrive is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six, generating 489hp.
For the North American market, the 530i will be available with a 2.0-liter turbo petrol four-cylinder engine producing 255hp, offered in both RWD and xDrive AWD configurations. The more powerful 540i, exclusively with xDrive, features a 375hp 3.0-liter inline-six, accelerating from 0-100kph in just 4.5 seconds.
