The 2023 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Scores 1-star rating in Global NCAP crash test

The 2023 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Scores 1-star rating in Global NCAP crash test.

The current-generation Wagon R lacks ISOFIX child mounts, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and side airbags.

In the most recent round of Global NCAP crash tests, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R attained a 1-star rating for adult crash safety and 0 stars for child safety. In the previous 2019 test, it had secured a 2-star rating, but the testing parameters were less stringent compared to 2023, resulting in a decline in the scores.

The adult safety rating for the Wagon R was 19.69 out of 34.00. It’s noteworthy that the Wagon R lacks ISOFIX child mounts. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Bharat NCAP was scheduled to be implemented on April 1, 2023.

2023 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Global NCAP: child crash test rating explained

While the Wagon R achieved a one-star rating in the adult crash assessment, the performance in child occupant protection was subpar. Maruti Suzuki chose not to include ISOFIX and did not recommend a Child Restraint System (CRS) for the Wagon R. The examination highlighted the absence of an option to deactivate the front passenger airbag for the rear-facing child restraint system, along with the lack of three-point seatbelts for all seating positions. This configuration poses a risk to the child’s safety in the event of airbag deployment during an impact. The tests revealed a high likelihood of injuries for children in both front and rear-facing positions.

Indian road safety

David Ward, president of the Towards Zero Foundation, remarked, “Maruti Suzuki once again falls significantly short in terms of safety performance for some of the most popular cars sold in India.”

In February 2023, Maruti Suzuki outpaced Toyota’s total sales with the Wagon R alone, selling 16,889 units compared to Toyota’s 15,267. Notably, the Wagon R isn’t even Maruti’s top-selling product, underscoring the substantial volume of sales the company consistently achieves.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data in 2020, road-related accidents in India resulted in over 1.2 lakh deaths, translating to a death every four and a half minutes. This emphasizes the importance of vigilance and safety on the road, regardless of the vehicle you drive.
